Alva man arrested for offering 14-year-old girl money for sex

ALVA — A 73-year-old Alva man was arrested Tuesday after allegedly offering a 14-year-old girl money for sex.

Duane Thomas Nelson, 73, of Alva, was arrested Tuesday on five felony counts: One count of kidnapping, one count of lewd molestation, one count of soliciting a minor for prostitution, one count of use of a loaded firearm while committing a felony and one count of attempt to provide a minor with an intoxicating beverage.

A motion was made in Woods County District Court Wednesday to keep Nelson jailed without bond. Nelson could face 521⁄2 years in jail if convicted on all counts.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed Wednesday in Woods County District Court, on Monday a 14-year-old girl told Alva Police Officer Ron Vasquez that day at about 8 p.m. she was walking by Alva Public Pool, when an elderly male driving a red Ford pickup truck pulled up and asked for directions to Walmart.

When she walked up to the passenger door of the vehicle, he grabbed her by the wrist and pulled her into the truck, according to the affidavit. He then drove off and drove around, stopping at Alva City Park’s pond parking lot.

The man then asked the girl if she would have sex with him for $50, according to the affidavit. When she said no, he asked if she would have sex with him for $100. According to the affidavit, the man then told her he had “other girls” and had helped a lot of young girls in Alva “financially.”

He then gave her a business card, which identified him as Duane T. Nelson, and gave his place of business as Nelson Trailer Sales, according to the affidavit. Nelson then asked her if she could “trust him” and to call him tomorrow. According to the affidavit, Nelson also told her if she showed the business card to her boyfriend and the police got hold of it, he would shoot the boyfriend.

According to the affidavit, the girl then lied and told him her boyfriend was meeting her there at the park. Nelson allowed her to get out of the truck and she ran into the park, where she observed Nelson circling the area looking for her, according to the affidavit.

The girl hid in the Alva Cemetery area and telephoned her mother, telling her what happened, according to the affidavit. Her mother then picked her up and took her to the police, where she made the report.

On June 15, Vasquez met with the girl and she made a voluntary call to Nelson’s cell phone and spoke with Nelson. The girl asked Nelson if he was serious about the conversation the day before, and how much money he would be willing to pay for sex, according to the affidavit.

According to the affidavit, when Nelson asked her if she was 15 or 16 years old, she told him she was only 14. Nelson said she could probably get him in a lot of trouble, according to the affidavit. Nelson told the girl he would have to “trust her” and she would have to “trust him.” He asked her if she was “on the pill,” according to the affidavit.

According to the affidavit, Nelson then told the girl he could not get her pregnant because he had been “worked on,” and again said he would have to “trust her” before he could have sex with her, but he wanted to meet with her and talk with her that evening, and he would give her some money. He agreed to meet with the girl around the Alva High School grounds and said he would bring her an alcoholic beverage of Smirnoff vodka and Sprite, according to the affidavit.

About 10 minutes after the phone call, Vasquez saw Nelson drive by Alva High School, according to the affidavit. After watching Nelson circle the area, he stopped Nelson and took him into custody. According to the affidavit, a loaded revolver was found in his pants pocket.

During his arrest, Nelson admitted to Vasquez he had a loaded firearm on his person as well as in his vehicle. He also admitted he had a drink consisting of vodka and Sprite inside the truck, and he had some money on him, according to the affidavit.

During an interview after the arrest, Nelson admitted to meeting with the girl a day earlier as well as talking with her on the phone. He also admitted he was driving on high school grounds to meet the girl and had the drink in his vehicle, according to the affidavit.

Following his arrest, police executed search warrants on Nelson’s vehicle. According to the affidavit, police found a loaded semi-automatic handgun, including a plastic cup containing the vodka and Sprite. Numerous bottles of alcohol also were seized from his office, as well as numerous firearms including handguns, shotguns and rifles.
