Enid police are seeking pair in I.D. fraud

ENID — Police have released photographs of two men they are trying to identify who were involved in attempting to pass a check using a fraudulent I.D. and Social Security card.

At 3:30 p.m. May 10, two men entered City National Bank, located inside Wal-Mart Supercenter, 5505 W. Garriott, and attempted to cash a check using an altered Social Security card and a Mexico Residency Card, said Lt. Eric Holtzclaw. The clerk checking the Social Security card noticed it was altered and notified authorities.

When the clerk told the men they could not cash the check, they fled before police could be summoned.

Investigators contacted the person, who lives in Oklahoma City, to whom the Social Security number was issued and alerted that person of the identity theft, Holtzclaw said.

The two suspects are described as Hispanic males with short black hair, clean shaven and thin builds. Both men wore striped polo-style shirts and jeans at the time.

“Merchants should be alert anytime they receive a Social Security card which appears to be tampered with and also should be very cautious about accepting identification cards issued out of Mexico or other foreign countries, as there is normally no verification system available to determine the authenticity of the I.D.,” Holtzclaw said.

People who either have lost their Social Security card or suspect identity theft of their Social Security number can report it to the police and also the Social Security Administration online at www.ssa.gov.

“Identity theft is a felony,” Holtzclaw said. “We encourage anybody who can identify those men in the picture to call us.”

Anyone having any information on the suspects involved in this identity theft case are asked to notify Enid Police Department at 242-7000 or Crime Stoppers at 233-6233.
