MEDFORD —
Grief counselors will be available Monday for Medford Public Schools students dealing with the death of one of their classmates.
Noah Gonzales, 15, was killed Friday morning in a two-vehicle accident near Ponca City in Kay County. He was pronounced dead at the scene of head and trunk injuries, according to an Oklahoma Highway Patrol report.
“We are going to have to deal with this and get the kids the help they need to get through it,” said Principal Tyler Locke.
Funeral arrangements for Gonzales are pending with Hills-Ely Funeral Home, of Medford.
The accident happened at 8:45 a.m. Friday on Oklahoma 11 and Enterprise Road, one mile north and six miles east of Ponca City.
According to the OHP report, Gonzales was a passenger in a 1999 Mazda pickup driven by Ryan Kilian, 15, of Medford. They were northbound on Enterprise Road when they failed to stop at a stop sign and hit a 1993 Ford Ranger pickup driven by Brian Dailey, 38, of Kaw City, according to the report.
Kilian’s pickup rolled one quarter time, partially ejecting Gonzales out of the passenger side window, pinning him under the vehicle, according to the report.
Kilian was taken to Ponca City Medical Center, where he was treated for trunk injuries and released. Dailey was admitted to the hospital in stable condition with trunk and leg injuries.
Neither Kilian nor Gonzales was wearing a seat belt, according to the report. Inattention was listed as the cause of the accident.
Both boys are members of the Medford High School football team.
Head coach Chad Burnham said there was no information as of Friday concerning any memorial.
“He was a freshman, good kid, straight A student,” Burnham said. “He comes from a good family.”
Gonzales played linebacker and running back on the football team. Kilian is a fullback and linebacker.
