Enid’s four Civitan clubs honored clergy members with a dinner Friday night and part of their Clergy Appreciation Week observance.
The week was inspired by the events that happened on board the USS Dorchester on Feb. 3, 1943, during World War II.
The ship, carrying 905 American soldiers, was torpedoed and sank.
Army chaplains George L. Fox, Alexander D. Goode, Clark V. Poling and John P. Washington helped pass out life jackets to soldiers and gave up their on life jackets to save four other men.
Civitan International President Bill Buscher was guest speaker at the dinner.
Enid’s four Civitan Clubs are:
• Enid Civitan, which meets at noon each Friday at Civitan Homes, 1314 N. Garland.
• Yes We Can Civitan, which meets at 5:30 p.m. the second and fourth Thursdays at The Wooden Nickel, 400 W. Walnut
• NOC Campus Civitan Club, which meets each Wednesday at NOC.
• Chisholm Trail Junior Civitan Club, which meets the second and fourth Tuesdays each month at 2005 E. Broadway.
