Enid Lights Up the Plains begins Friday night

ENID, Okla. — Residents will usher in the Christmas season Friday night with the annual Enid Lights Up the Plains celebration downtown.

The event begins at 5 p.m., and Santa Claus arrives at 5:30. Entertainment, hot chocolate and other goodies will be available on the Garfield County Court House lawn.

Entertainment will begin before Santa arrives and will continue after, running until 7:30 p.m. Performing will be Enid Salvation Army Citadel Band; Dance Works of Enid, presenting the Rockettes from “The Nutcracker”; Dab O’ Glory Quartet; The Power; Miss Enid; and Emily Faith.

Rides in a horse-drawn wagon will be available, and fireworks will begin at about 7 p.m.

Enid Lights Up the Plains was started 18 years ago.

During the Christmas shopping season, many merchants downtown will stay open late on Thursdays. Stores staying open until 7 p.m. are 4RKids’ The 2nd Story gift shop, A to Z Carpet, B Hip Kids, Bargain Bin, C.M. Miller, For You!, Lola’s Boutique, Muncy Photography, One Page At a Time, Photo-Op, Our Family Pet Shop, Soapweeds & Cactus, The Felt Bird, The Gift Box, TuTu Sweet Bows, Pink Coconut Tanning and Wheat Capitol Running Co.

Kelly Tompkins, director of Main Street Enid, said merchants have had a good year, and there is much more participation this year, with more retail businesses involved. During 2012, more than $7 million in private money has been reinvested downtown in 20 renovation projects and building purchases.
