ENID —
Tents are in place. The sound system is all set.
Now, it’s time to see if enough people from Enid and northwest Oklahoma will show up at Autry Technology Center and try to break a Guinness World Record for number of kites flown simultaneously.
“Everything is coming along even slightly ahead of schedule,” said Stan Hicks, one of the lead organizers of Kites Over Enid 2010.
Whether or not the necessary number of people show up for the event is anyone’s guess at this point. Hicks, however, still is confident it could happen.
“My wildest idea would be to run out of kites at 10,400,” Hicks said. “I guarantee if that many people show up to fly a kite, we will set a new world record.”
The weather also will have to cooperate in order for the event to be a successful one.
According to National Weather Service, the forecast for Saturday is mostly sunny skies with a high near 85. Winds are forecast to be from the east around 9 mph, then turning to the south.
Event kites are said to be able to be flown even in light wind conditions.
Hicks called the forecast weather conditions “absolutely perfect.”
Registration for the event officially will begin at 9:30 a.m., though officials may start taking registrations at 9 a.m.
Hicks said it will be important for everyone to register, even if they are bringing their own kite.
“You have to register in order to be counted in the Guinness record,” Hicks said. “If you’re not signed in, you will not count.”
Should Enid set the Guinness World Record, Hicks said April Danahy of Security National Bank, will make the official announcement right away.
After the event, officials immediately will mail in the appropriate forms to the Guinness World Record organization. Officials will include a video from KJ Productions of the event.
Events actually start today with a wind energy forum at Autry Tech. The forum begins at 1 p.m. During the day TKO Sport Kite Team will demonstrate trick kite flying at 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
