Ex-clerk faces charges of embezzling money

ENID, Okla. — A former employee at the Garfield County court clerk's office was charged last week with two misdemeanors after admitted to taking $250 from a safe in October.

Florence Elizabeth Briggs, 42, was charged with embezzlement and petit larceny for the Oct. 5, 2012, theft. She faces up to a year in county jail and up to a $1,000 fine for the embezzlement charge and up to six months in jail and/or a fine of $10 to $500 on the petit larceny.

Online court records show Briggs was charged Jan. 8 and a warrant issued for her arrest. She surrendered that day and posted a $500 bond. She is scheduled for arraignment on the charges Thursday morning.

An affidavit filed by Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Charles Dancer states he was contacted Oct. 23, 2012, by the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office concerning a theft from the county clerk’s office.

Dancer was told the office received $250 for a road crossing permit Oct. 5, and the money was placed in a safe in the office. When the safe was opened again Oct. 9, 2012, the money, and the envelope it was in, were missing.

On Dec. 17, 2012, Briggs admitted to Dancer she’d taken the envelope with the money Oct. 5 while the safe was unlocked and open, according to the affidavit. The money was used to pay her car loan.

Briggs was terminated from the county clerk’s office Dec. 18, 2012.
