Memorial set for K-9 officer Mako

ENID, Okla. — A memorial service for Garfield County Sheriff’s Department K-9 Mako is set for 2 p.m. Saturday.

Sheriff Jerry Niles said the memorial will be held at 116 W. Oxford, in the old Army Reserve building at Garfield County Fairgrounds. Service will be led by Stephen Mortensen. The public is welcome to attend, but seating will be limited.

Mako died Dec. 31 from stomach tumors, an illness that was unexpected and came as a shock to the department.

“K-9 Mako was a dual-purpose police service dog, meaning Mako was not only very good at sniffing out illegal drugs on our county’s streets and highways, but he also used his phenomenal nose to sniff out bad guys when they were trying to elude law enforcement,” Niles said. “Mako and Deputy Darryl Beebe were partners for nearly seven years, as Deputy Beebe had purchased Mako on his own.”

Niles said K-9 teams from around the state are expected to attend the memorial service.

Beebe said the Belgian Malinois was part of his family, and had been in front of thousands of children in the county during demonstrations and visits to area schools. Mako also had a part in the Skeleton Creek Production “Cactus Creek.”

Niles said the department will look at purchasing another dog, and donations for the dog and equipment are being accepted.
