NOC planetarium open the first Thursday each month

ENID, Okla. — Phases of the moon for January are:

• Jan. 5: Last quarter.

• Jan. 11: New moon.

• Jan. 18: First quarter.

• Jan. 27: Full moon (Moon After Yule, Old Moon).

The Northern Oklahoma College Mackie Planetarium will be open to the public at 6:30 p.m. the first Thursday of each month.

Admission is free, but a donation of a canned good or non-perishable food item for Horn of Plenty would be appreciated.

The program for January is “Two Small Pieces of Glass,” which is about the history of the telescope.

We also will check out the winter night skies over Enid. Following the program, we will have a telescope clinic for those who received a telescope from Santa, have purchased one recently or are thinking about buying one and need some information. Bring your instrument and your questions and we will do our best to help you.

The NOC observatory will be closed until Jan. 15.

After that, every Wednesday and Thursday, weather permitting, the observatory will be open to the public. Sessions start at 6:30 p.m. Large groups planning to visit the observatory or planetarium should call 548-2399 to schedule an appointment.



Killam is resident astronomer and astronomical league coordinator for Leonardo’s Star Quest Astronomy Club and director of NOC observatory.
