Updated: Pursuit ends near school

ENID, Okla. — A brief pursuit led to the arrest of an Enid man on outstanding warrants and drug possession charges Wednesday morning, in the 1500 block of West Maine.

Officials at McKinley Elementary School, located about two blocks to the west of where the arrest occurred, were notified by law enforcement about the incident near the school and told to take children on the playground into the school building.

McKinley Principal Kay Kiner sent an email to parents Wednesday afternoon, explaining the situation.

The email, released from the Enid Public Schools central office, reads in part: “Dear McKinley Parents: I wanted to let you know about an event that occurred today in the McKinley area. In a situation unrelated to our school, Enid Police Department officers were trying to make an arrest in the neighborhood. As a precaution, they recommended that students come inside from recess and that we secure the building. Within a very short amount of time, they let us know it was safe and they were leaving the area.”

Undersheriff Jerry Niles said while on patrol at Willow and Van Buren Street, Deputy Patrick Cooksey saw Kimanthi Marston, 43, driving a gold Nissan Pathfinder.

Cooksey had valid warrants for Marston, and had made numerous attempts to arrest him over the past three weeks.

“Deputy Cooksey engaged his emergency lights, stopping the vehicle on the west-side access road at Cedar Street,” Niles said. “Deputy Cooksey contacted the driver, who he knew as Marston and ordered him to turn off the engine.”

However, Marston drove off and Cooksey pursued the vehicle for several minutes, ending in the alleyway of the 1600 block of West Broadway, where Marston stopped and ran from his vehicle.

Deputies and Enid Police Department officers chased and apprehended Marston in the alley of the 1500 block of West Maine.

Marston was placed under arrest, transported to a hospital for treatment of an injury and then booked into jail on complaints of attempting to elude, possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia, along with warrants for domestic abuse and domestic battery in the presence of a minor child.

Enid Public Schools spokeswoman Amber Graham Fitzgerald said law enforcement contacts the schools system anytime they are dealing with a situation near any of the schools.
