County sheriff's office probing series of daytime rural burglaries

ENID, Okla. — Garfield County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a string of daytime burglaries.

Undersheriff Jerry Niles said the most recent reports are from the southeast portion of the county.

Deputies took a report of a burglary in the 25000 block of East Bison Wednesday. Fifteen long guns and some jewelry were taken from the county home. Estimated value is $4,500.

“It was close to Noble and Logan counties we contacted them, and they were also investigating daytime burglaries in their counties as well,” Niles said.

He said there also were reports of a mid-1990 silver Chevy Camaro being seen in the area at the time of the burglaries, which matches a description of a vehicle related to other county burglaries.

“That kind of matches a description of a vehicle out of a Noble County crime scene,” Niles said. “A silver two-door sports car was seen leaving the scene there.”

Deputies also are investigating another Wednesday burglary in the Green Valley addition.

Niles said a 55-inch LED TV and furniture were taken during the day at a home in the 1800 block of Valley Road.

On Tuesday, deputies took a report of a burglary at a home in the 20000 block of East Bison. In that burglary, a single rifle, valued at about $800, was reported stolen.

Niles said all of the burglaries occurred during normal working hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“Homeowners should be recording their serial numbers on all their valuables, taking detailed photographs of jewelry and ensuring jewelry shops have copies of their purchases on record,” he said. “If something is stolen, it gives deputies the ability to go out and recover it.”

Since Oct. 1, the sheriff’s office has investigated 20 daytime burglaries to homes and automobiles.

“We’ve recovered on a couple of those burglaries, and we’ve got charges pending on a couple of them,” he said. “We always see an increase just prior to Christmas and just after Christmas.”

To help protect their property, Niles said homeowners should keep shrubs and trees trimmed away from doors and windows.

If leaving for an extended time, let a friend, family member or neighbor know how long you will be gone. He said to also place your home on a watch list with local law enforcement or the sheriff’s office.

“If you see anyone or anything suspicious, report it to the sheriff’s office immediately,” Niles said.
