EFD responds on 2 fire calls

ENID, Okla. — Enid Fire Department responded to two home fires Thursday evening. There were no injuries in either fire, and both homes are expected to be repaired.

EFD responded at 7:37 p.m. Thursday to a fire at 622 W. Rush.

Enid Fire Marshal Ken Helms said the fire started in a bedroom and was reported by a passerby or neighbor. The home was unoccupied at the time of the blaze.

Helms said the room and its contents were destroyed, but the fire was extinguished before it spread to any other areas.

The remainder of the home suffered smoke damage.

The cause of the fire officially remains undetermined, but Helms said it appeared to have originated from a space heater placed too close to combustibles.

EFD estimated the damage at $14,000.

Firefighters responded at 9:45 p.m. Thursday to a report of a fire at 1322 E. Cherokee.

The home was occupied at the time, and Helms said the occupants smelled smoke and were able to safely leave and call 911.

Helms said the fire was confined to an overhang on the home’s front porch and the immediately adjacent portion of the attic.

He said it is unknown whether the fire originated externally from the porch or from an electrical fault in the attic.

The home did not suffer significant fire damage, but there was extensive smoke damage. EFD estimated the damage at $10,000.

Helms said both fires are believed to have been accidental.

Both families affected are receiving emergency assistance from Cimarron Valley Chapter of American Red Cross.
