Students sing, help out at Hope Outreach

ENID, Okla. — Eight cherubic second-graders lifted spirits when they lifted their voices in song Tuesday afternoon at Hope Outreach Community Care and Homeless Ministry.

Gretchen Streck’s class came from Hillsdale Christian School to spend the afternoon doing mission work at the shelter and the Hope Outreach thrift store.

There were 16 people gathered at the shelter, listening to the children sing “Be Thankful,” “Come Bless the Lord” and “Count Your Blessings.” Obviously, the music fell sweetly upon their ears. Their eyes shown and their faces brightened as they watched the little ones sing.

Streck’s class regularly comes as a service project.

“They come once a month, and we have them do things like fold newspapers,” said Leland Streck, manager of the community care and homeless ministry.

“This month, they brought us things that begin with N, like noodles. Every class at Hillsdale has a missions project, and this is theirs.”

At the thrift store, customers stopped shopping for bargains, drawn to the voices. One shopper held up her cell phone, recording video of the children singing. They applauded the students’ efforts after each song.

Children in the class are Adi Betz, Taryn Gray, Kellen Epps, Alice Watkins, Emily Corey, Landon Schultz, Brooklyn Phillips and Daniel Voth.
