Should Texarkana (Texas) win the regional tournament, the Indians may have a shortage of players for the World Series, which begins Friday in Fargo, N.D.
The biggest question mark would be the status of John Stilson, the strong-armed pitcher. Stilson is expected to be offered a contract with the Minnesota Twins after the regional tournament. The Twins, who selected Stilson in the 19th round of the June draft, are expected to offer a $500,000 signing bonus.
If he signs, Stilson would give up his amateur status and not be eligible for the World Series.
But sources said Stilson is willing to wait until Texarkana’s season is completely over, whether that’s at the Enid regional or the Fargo World Series.
But other players are questionable for the Series as well. Catcher Janson Carr is a standout senior quarterback at New Boston (Texas) High School, and there is concern whether he would leave the Indians to get to preseason football practice.
Another question mark is the condition of outfielder Heath Mayo, who suffered cuts on his face and a concussion on the first day of the tournament on Thursday when he ran into the wall in foul territory down the right field line.
The status of another outfielder is in doubt for Tuesday’s action. Kendrick Henderson is supposed to take a final exam for a summer class at Texarkana Junior College and might miss the game.
