E-Lose It users have lot to gain

ENID — In the first seven months of the E-Lose It program, people across Enid have lost a combined 4,400 pounds.

While the program is seeing results, Frank Baker wants to see more.

“For the participants, we hope it’s a lifestyle changing step,” said Baker, director of Eagle Marketing, which created the program with Enid News & Eagle. “If it turns into something more long-term, that would be great.”

E-Lose It began in July as a collaboration between several businesses in Enid. Baker said Debbi Knoll, Enid News & Eagle advertising director, and Kim Boeckman, YMCA fitness director, came up with the idea at nearly the same time.

The ultimate goal of the program is to guide Enid residents to shed a combined 50,000 pounds, approximately one pound for each person in Enid.

E-Lose It originally was to be a two- or three-year campaign, but Brent Price says a healthy lifestyle takes a far longer commitment.

“I’d like to see it continue on,” said Price, E-Lose It spokesman.

Price said after some diets end, people are susceptible to returning to their original lifestyles, thinking they don’t have to eat healthy anymore.

But Price said that’s the wrong road to travel.

“You enjoy life by being healthier,” he said.

Jeff Funk, News & Eagle publisher, said he’s pleased at the direction of the program and the response from Enid.

“When you look at the number of folks who have signed up for the program and the activities, I feel really good about the participation,” Funk said.

As of Feb. 11, 1,120 people were listed on the E-Lose It Web site as participants.

Cindy Allen, News & Eagle managing editor, said she, too, is pleased with the direction of E-Lose It.

“I expect to hear more stories of people who, through their programs, are meeting their (weight loss) goals,” she said.

More to add

The E-Lose It Web site — e-loseit.com — has several resources available for people looking to lose weight. There are blogs written by Price, tips and suggestions for exercising and even healthy recipes.

Allen said she hopes to add more in years to come.

“I’d like to see restaurants commit to having E-Lose It recipes,” she said.

Local restaurants could put stickers on menu items good for people on the weight-loss program, she said.

Funk added he would like to see companies in Enid have “biggest loser” competitions in which the individual losing the most weight through E-Lose It would win.

Price said he would like to see an increase in E-Lose It special events so more people could participate and “keep fitness on the mind.”
