Koch stays active in the community

ENID — Koch Nitrogen in Enid continued to operate in 2009 against the backdrop of a nationwide recession and the threat of “cap and trade” legislation.

The plant, east of Enid on South 78th, has about 100 employees. It is a subsidiary of Koch fertilizer LLC, based in Wichita, Kan.

The plant and its affiliates produce and distribute nitrogen fertilizer around the world. Together, they produce about 7.5 million metric tons of nitrogen products annually.

Theresa Johnson, Koch Companies Public Sector LLC spokeswoman, said the plant has been involved in community service projects, providing a $4,500 challenge grant to Enid Fire Department to raise money for rescue equipment, provided the city raised an additional $8,500.

The grant was to ensure the department had equipment for battling fires and to rescue people trapped in structures or vehicles, according to a press release.

“After that challenge grant was announced, the fire department was able to raise the required funds to purchase the equipment they needed,” Johnson said.

In 2009, the company also expanded its operations to other locations in the nation and around the world.

Last year, the company opened supply and marketing offices in Singapore and in Marlborough, U.K., Johnson said. The company also entered a urea ammonium nitrate marketing agreement with a chemical company in Pryor and developed dry bulk terminals in Brazil, Mexico, southern France and the United Kingdom.

Koch Industries focuses on eight different industry areas: polymers and fibers, minerals, process and pollution control equipment and technology, ranching, refining and chemicals, commodity training and services, forest and consumer products and fertilizers.

The company was named after Fred C. Koch, who in 1927 developed an improved method of converting heavy oil to gasoline, according to the company’s Web site.
