Trojans shoot for another playoff berth

MUTUAL — Senior quarterback Jory Custar, a four-year starter, will be trying to lead Sharon-Mutual to its third straight playoff appearance this season.

Custar threw for 975 yards and ran for another 950 in leading the Trojans to a 6-4 season and a third-place finish in District C-1. Sharon-Mutual lost to Grandfield 62-34 in the first round of the playoffs.

“We have a lot of team speed and we’re very athletic,’’ said Trojans coach Brad Shryock.

“We have a lot of game experience in a lot of positions.’’

Shryock said depth and a lack of numbers are his biggest concern.

Sharon-Mutual averaged 38.2 points per game and allowed 28.8 points a game.

Clint White, a 200-pound senior defensive lineman, is the leading returning defender. He is Sharon-Mutual’s other four-year starter.

Other starters back are Mac Griffith, a 180-pound senior tight end; Jeremiah Hathaway, a 140-pound senior running back; Zach Sparks, a 170-pound senior running back; and Dalton Shryock, a 230-pound offensive lineman.

Griffith caught 60 passes for 650 yards last season.

Coach Shryock also is counting on Edrie White, a 260-pound junior lineman; Jase Day, a 145-pound senior wide receiver; and Kris Nelson, a 205-pound junior lineman.

The Trojans’ district losses came to Shattuck 58-16 and Buffalo 34-6.
