I like watching the TV show “Glee,” which I’m sure shocks some of you. It annoys my husband because every Tuesday night I can’t wait to watch the teenage angst mixed with an education of popular music. For those unfamiliar, the one-hour show in its third season on Fox features a talented cast of young people playing high school students who sing their way through each drama-filled episode. I prefer listening to their harmonies and Gleek-ified spins of Billboard-charting tunes, as opposed to listening to the actual pop and rock artists whose songs they perform. (Let’s face it, I’m just not a big fan of folks like Lady Gaga, Katy Perry or Rihanna.)
One of my “Glee” favorites is their version of Grammy-winner Bruno Mars’ “Just The Way You Are.” The main chorus goes like this:
“When I see your face, there’s not a thing that I would change
Cause you’re amazing, just the way you are
And when you smile, the whole world stops and stares for a while
Because girl you’re amazing, just the way you are.”
I keep being reminded by the Lord through this rock song that He sees me in the same way.
• We know the Lord’s works are wonderful and you and I are fearfully and wonderfully made by Him (Psalm 139:13-18)
• We also know He already had plans for us and set us apart before we were born (Jeremiah 1:5)
• We know we are His workmanship, uniquely made works of art crafted by Him (Ephesians 2:10)
Christian songwriter Steven Curtis Chapman was inspired to sing about how we are God’s masterpieces “fashioned by God’s hand and perfectly planned to be just who you are” in “Fingerprints of God.”
Like the potter in Jeremiah 18, God shapes us into the people He wants us to be. Daring to quote my devotional again: “A potter isn’t very emotionally engaged with mass-produced pottery. But our Potter is deeply invested in His work. He crafts each piece individually with a specific design in mind and He loves what He does.”
The Lord, like a potter, is preoccupied with how beautiful we are. Others may only see the lumps of clay, the ugly unformed product, the insignificant parts that lend to the whole. But He knows what the finished pottery will look like and He recognizes we are amazing pieces.
Need any more proof? Just read Genesis 1:27, 31 — “ So God created [you and me] in His own image ... He saw all He had made and it was very good.” We weren’t afterthoughts. He made you and me just the way we are on purpose!
