OU to release lectures by late professor Fears

NORMAN, Okla. — The University of Oklahoma is releasing a lecture series from a renowned professor who died earlier this month at the age of 67.

The university says it will release professor Rufus Fears’ series of lectures called “The Story of Freedom in America.” The lectures will be posted Thursday on the website for the Institute for the American Constitutional Heritage.

“The Story of Freedom in America” is a complete, 18-lecture course that’s free and open to the public. The university says the lectures explore the American experience of freedom from the Revolutionary War to the present day.

Fears joined the OU faculty in 1990 as a professor of classics. OU President David Boren says the lecture series is Fears’ way “of giving all of us one last gift.”

Fears taught two lecture series in Enid as artist-in-residence for Cherokee Strip Heritage Center and planned another series beginning in October.

Lew Ward, who helped bring Fears to Enid for his lecture series, said there was a movement to bring Fears to Northern Oklahoma College and create the Rufus Fears library, but that is a “pipe dream” at this point, he said.

Cheryl Evans, president of Northern Oklahoma College, said NOC had been in discussions with Fears to bring him to Enid and create a library. However, those discussions are suspended, she said.
