Oklahoma records first influenza death of season

TULSA, Okla. — The Oklahoma Department of Health says the state has recorded its first flu death of the season.

The department says the death occurred in Tulsa County between Dec. 19 and Christmas Day.

Officials did not release specific details about the person who died but said it was someone between the ages of 19 and 64.

The health department says the state has reported 75 hospitalized cases of influenza since Sept. 30. More than a quarter of those cases were reported in the past week.

Health department data shows that 24 of those hospitalizations were reported in Tulsa County, while Oklahoma County reported 10 cases.

The flu was rearing its ugly head in Enid as of Dec. 19.

According to INTEGRIS Bass Baptist Health Center, its emergency department had treated three to four patients testing positive for type A influenza, but no one had been hospitalized for the flu. Urgent Care Plus had seen nine positive flu cases. And St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center reported 19 flu cases as of Dec. 19.
