Grants help YWCA offer comfort during crisis

ENID — Tricia Mitchell says Garfield County Emergency Food and Shelter grants are important to the functionality of YWCA’s Crisis Center.

“What we use it for is to house individuals who are homeless,” said Mitchell, women’s services director for Enid YWCA. “The grant pays $12.50 per day for someone to stay in the shelter.”

Garfield County Emergency Food and Shelter grants are meted out each year through the Garfield County emergency assistance board, said Sean Byrne, executive director of United Way of Enid and Northwest Oklahoma.

This year, three local organizations applied to receive the grant, and each was allocated money.

Enid YWCA received $6,950, Community Development Support Association received $6,950 and Salvation Army got $5,000.

Salvation Army received $5,000 because that’s what they requested, Byrne said, while the two other organizations requested more.

Mitchell said $6,950 will pay for 556 days of women and children staying at the facility’s shelter, which equates to 18 people staying one month.

YWCA’s need for the grant  may be greater than ever.

Last fiscal year, 683 nights of shelter were provided for homeless individuals at YWCA.

Already through the first six months of this fiscal year, there have been 685 nights of shelter provided, Mitchell said.

“People are staying a little longer as it’s harder to give them jobs and find places for them to live,” she said. “It’s good to have that supplement we get (from the grant).”

All money received by awarded agencies is passed down by the federal government, Byrne said.

In order to be considered for a grant, each agency must turn in applications and specifically state how the money will be spent.

The agency requesting the funds also must be experienced in the community.
