ENID —
Volunteers in the Retired Senior Volunteer Program in Enid deliver about 100 meals a day to seniors across the city.
While RSVP is able to accomplish that goal daily, there always is a need for more volunteers to help deliver meals, said Bennie Mullins.
Mullins, executive director for RSVP, said volunteers are needed more than ever, especially now.
“We always need drivers,” she said.
Mullins said the organization has other needs, too.
For instance, Mullins would love to have enough money to have an Enid-only coordinator to supervise the program’s local activities.
RSVP reaches out to Garfield County and surrounding counties: Alfalfa, Grant, Noble and Major are under the Enid region’s umbrella.
There already is an individual who coordinates activities for counties outside of Garfield, but there’s nobody in Garfield to spearhead that effort.
She said the program also is on a constant search for additional sources of funds.
“There’s never enough money (to go around),” Mullins said.
Right now, she said, RSVP is trying to raise money to keep the meals program going.
RSVP does have some fundraisers, including one that involves selling ornaments around Christmastime.
Aside from the mobile meals program, the organization also has an information center in Enid and a senior station that provides activities for seniors.
RSVP also helps supervise and assist Enid Senior Citizens Center.
“We are so busy,” Mullins remarked.
RSVP has around 940 volunteers in the five counties.
Those interested in becoming a volunteer for RSVP, Mullins said, can stop by RSVP at 602 S. Van Buren.
Those wishing to help deliver meals can contact Harlan Stratton, coordinator of the mobile meals program.
The mobile meals program covers 12 or 13 routes throughout the city Monday through Friday.
