ENID —
Sarah Brinsley went to Denny Price Family YMCA on her lunch break one day in the middle of February, eager to sign up herself and her 3-year-old daughter, Madison, for YMCA memberships.
After lunch, Brinsley went back to work at StarTek and soon received a phone call.
Thinking it was unusual, since she didn’t receive calls at work often, she answered, and on the other line was someone from the YMCA, telling her she was the 8,000th membership signee.
“I was jumping up and down like I just won a million dollars,” said Brinsley, 26, laughing.
Because she was the 8,000th member, Brinsley said YMCA waived her $65 joiner fee and gave her a one-year free membership.
Kim Boeckman, YMCA membership director, said the prize for the 8,000th member had been discussed internally but was not revealed until the person won.
She said she was happy to see the YMCA reach its milestone.
“When we set out to plan the renovation and phases of the renovation we wanted it to be something for families, and we feel we have accomplished our goal,” Boeckman said.
Brinsley said she joined the YMCA for many reasons.
“One reason I joined was they added on to their facility,” she said.
YMCA recently completed a round of renovations, including adding new equipment and facilities, including a child care area that Brinsley likely will allow Madison to take advantage of.
Another reason Brinsley said she joined is because Madison loves T-ball, and she plans to sign her up to play.
Brinsley said she likes to walk and run and even do some weights. She also wants to participate in yoga and kick-boxing classes.
She said she’s excited for everything, and she still can’t believe she was the 8,000th member to sign up at the YMCA.
“I had no idea, absolutely,” she said. “I had no clue.”
