The Shangri-La Chinese Acrobats are the opening act of the 2006-2007 season of the Northwest Oklahoma Concert Series at Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva.
The acrobats offer more than a glimpse into the fascinating Orient. Their act consists of sensational Chinese acrobatics, balancing feats, martial arts displays and more.
Training to become a member of the touring company of the Shangri-La Chinese Acrobats begins at an early age. In fact, many of the members learned from their parents, who were members of the troupe.
Formal lessons and training begin at the age of 5 or 6, when observation already has become a fantastic teacher. There are three schools for the arts in China β the first is dance, the second is Chinese opera and the third is acrobatics. Acrobatic students spend four hours each day in training until age 14 or 15; by then their art has become a part of their daily lives and is virtually second nature.
The Hai family has directed and led the Shangri-La Chinese Acrobats for more than 20 years. In acrobatic circles, the Hai name is highly respected and synonymous with physical feats of daring and skill. Those skills, combined with high production values, create a thrilling theatrical experience for the audience.
