ENID — Following a recount in the Garfield County District 1 Republican commissioner race, Dennis McKinzie and Marc Bolz still will have a runoff later this month to determine who will win the post.

In Wednesday’s recount at Garfield County Election Board, McKinzie, of Enid, received 432 votes, one more than he did in initial voting.

Bolz, of Covington, ended up with 429, the same number of votes he garnered in the primary election, as did Russell Bowling, of Douglas, who ended up with 424 votes.

Bowling, who said last week he was shocked at how close the vote was, requested the recount.

He said he requested the recount because he thought voting machines weren’t always accurate, and he felt he would be more sure of the outcome if the ballots were hand-counted.

“I didn’t really expect it would change a whole lot,” he said, “(but) for my peace of mind I wanted to be sure.”

Bowling said he knew who he would vote for in the Aug. 24 runoff, but when asked who, wouldn’t reveal his choice. He also said he was surprised one of the other candidates got more votes than he thought he would, but again he wouldn’t reveal who.

McKinzie said he felt the accuracy of the ballots was “extremely good.”

“I’m very pleased with the outcome and results of the recount,” he said.

McKinzie said his family and Bolz’ family know each other well, and they’re both ready to battle it out Aug. 24.

“We’re both ready to roll up our sleeves and get ready for the next step and hoop we have to go through,” he said. “I know Marc will work hard, as will I, and I wish their family the best during the next two weeks as it comes down to the 24th.

“We will just see the best man win.”

McKinzie also congratulated Bowling on having a well-run campaign, as well as the “integrity and pride he took on running his campaign.”

Like Bowling, Bolz said he didn’t expect a big change in the results following the recount.

He credited both McKinzie and Bowling for running good campaigns.

He said he wanted to thank everyone who voted for him in the primary election, but added his work isn’t done.

“I’m ready to get after it in the second round,” he said.

The winner of the runoff will assume the seat, since no Democrat or independent candidates filed.
