Sonya Coleman is hoping 15 years of banking experience will give her the edge in voting for Woodward County treasurer.
Coleman, 53, of Woodward, is vying for the position of treasurer in Woodward County. She is opposed by Brenda Neagle, 53, in Tuesday’s Republican primary. The winner of Tuesday’s primary will take the seat, since no Democrat or independent candidates filed for the office.
Coleman has worked in the treasurer’s office for 12 years and is the current deputy treasurer. She also has worked 15 years at Bank of Woodward, now Central National Bank of Alva.
Coleman said the reason she filed for the position was because she wanted to make the most seamless transition possible in the treasurer’s office.
“The girls in the office are 100 percent supportive of me,” Coleman said. “The outgoing treasurer has been very encouraging.”
If elected, Coleman said she will continue to do the “good job” the current treasurer, Wilma Blaylock, has been doing.
Coleman said there is a lot more to the job than tax billing and collection. She said the treasurer’s office basically is the banking office for the entire county, so the person who is in charge needs to make sure the work there is done correctly.
“I feel like my experience speaks for itself,” she said.
Brenda Neagle
Brenda Neagle is hoping her experience in the Woodward County Assessor’s Office carries her to a victory in Tuesday’s Republican primary election.
Neagle, 55, of Woodward, is vying for the seat of Woodward County treasurer, a post currently held by Wilma Blaylock.
Neagle is the first deputy assessor at Woodward County Assessor’s Office. She said the position in the office, plus certification, makes her a good candidate for the office.
Sonya Coleman is running against Neagle for the office. The winner of Tuesday’s primary will take the seat, since no Democrat or independent candidates filed for the office.
“It’s something I’ve thought about for the last four to five years,” Neagle said. “The opportunity came when (Blaylock) decided to retire and I knew I could do the job so I put my hat in the ring.
“I feel confident in my ability to do the job, so I decided to run for the office.”
Neagle has worked in the assessor’s office for 11 years, and has her treasurer certification through Oklahoma Tax Commission.
Neagle said her goals if she is elected to the office are to maintain what the current treasurer is doing in the office of the treasurer.
“If I am elected, I will serve the county well and I will have an open-door policy to my office,” she said.
