History is recreated

Chautauqua in the Park is time to get some knowledge

The 1960s are on the minds of people this year as several key historical events are commemorated. So, it’s appropriate this year’s Enid Chautauqua in the Park series also features some famous characters from this very important time in our history and culture.

Chautauqua is an annual event held in the early summer in which characters from history come to life in front of a live audience in an intimate setting. The Chautauqua event is a way for people to get a small glimpse of history.

Academics from across the United States work all year long to perfect their characters from history. Their live performances take on the persona of the character, and they present a piece of history for the audience. Later, the audience can ask the character questions, and also query the actors who portray these characters about their studies of these famous people.

Chautauqua in the Park this year features George Wallace, Barry Goldwater, Malcom X, Rachel Carson and Betty Friedan. Julia Child also is a part of this year’s performances. Many of the actors have been through Enid before portraying other characters of history.

Performances will be held each evening through Saturday at Humphrey Heritage Village. Evening events begin around 6:30 and end around 9. Plus, there are workshops during the day, also at the Village. Each of these events is free, thanks to local donors and organizations that help make it possible.

The events are entertaining, enlightening and informational. It’s a good way to spend a summer evening. We encourage people to come out to one or all of the performances this week and catch a glimpse of history few people ever get a chance to witness.
