MOORELAND — Melvin L. Bird, 87-year-old Mooreland resident, died Wednesday, January 23, 2013, at his home in Mooreland. Funeral will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, January 29, 2013, at Crosspoint Christian Church in Mooreland. Burial will be in Liberty Cemetery, south of Bouse Junction. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, January 28, 2013, at Billings Funeral Home in Mooreland.

Melvin Leo Bird was born January 8, 1926, in Cestos, Oklahoma, to Floyd Elmer and Viola (Johns) Bird.

Melvin was raised in the Mutual and Quinlan areas and attended school at Lone Star and Quinlan. He was inducted into the United States Army in April 1944 and was honorably discharged in April 1946.

Melvin was united in marriage to Ruth Marie Stevenson November 9, 1946, at Ed Johns home. They made their first home on a farm southeast of Quinlan, and in 1950 they moved to the Hopkins Farm. They lived in several different places, including Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Wichita, Kansas, before moving back to Oklahoma in 2004.

Melvin worked as a farmer, carpenter and a mechanic. He worked for Shannon’s in Wichita, Kansas, and for Woodward County. He retired from Sedgewick County in 1999.

Melvin attended Crosspoint Christian Church. He enjoyed hunting, camping, fishing, showing cars, re-enacting at Cowtown Museum and feeding his calves. His most favorite thing was being a grandpa. He and Ruth enjoyed going to Senior Citizens Center.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Bird of the home; two sons, Larry Bird of Clearwater, Kansas, and Gary Bird and wife Valorie of Lawton; brother, Wayneard Hopkins and wife Flora of Pecos, Texas; sister, Leona Shannon of Wichita, Kansas; three grandchildren, Larry Gene “L.G.” Bird and wife Julia of Seneca, Missouri, Michael Bird and wife Diana of McAllen, Texas, and Carl and Crystal Hayes of Deltona, Florida; seven great-grandchildren, Patrick Bird, Roselene Bird, Brandon Strange, Tristan Strange, Kaitlyn Hayes and Christian and Elizabeth Bird; other relatives; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd Bird and Viola Johns Bird Hopkins; stepfather C.R. Hopkins; brother, Wesley Bird and wife Louise; daughter-in-law, Betty Bird; and grandchildren, Shelly and Kelly Bird.
