Claudia Kay (Galusha) Schmitt

ENID — A celebration of life for Claudia Kay (Galusha) Schmitt, 63, will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, 2011, in the Bixby High School auditorium, 601 S. Riverview, Bixby, Okla., with two former students, Jay Bittle and Joe St.John, officiating. Services will be under the local direction of Brown-Cummings Funeral Home. She was cremated at her request.

Claudia was born Aug. 23, 1948, in Enid to Claude H. and Virginia (Wheeler) Galusha and died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2011, in Hot Springs, Ark., following a short but valiant battle with cancer.

She graduated from Enid High School in 1966, and received her BA and an MA in English and education from Phillips University. She taught in the Bixby, Okla., school district for 25 years and the Mt. Ida, Ark., school district for six years. She retired from teaching in May, 2010.

Claudia married Thomas A. Schmitt June 1, 1981, in Tulsa, Okla. To this union a son, Christopher Todd, was born. Claudia and her family made their home in Broken Arrow, Okla., for many years, then in Mt. Ida, Ark., for the last seven years.

Claudia is survived by her husband, Tom, of the home; one son, Chris of Dallas; sister Gaye and husband Joe Atchley of Hot Springs, Ark.; sister-in-law Stephanie Galusha; brother Bill Galusha and family, all of Enid; sister-in-law Sarah and husband Cisco Maldonado of Broken Arrow; step-sister-in-law Marna Hyatt of Melbourne, Fla.; her beloved Golden, Millie, and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. She will be missed by all.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Bob Galusha and in-laws, Robert and Bonnie Mitchell.

Memorials may be made in Claudia’s memory to the American Cancer Society, Arkansas Hospice or a charity of choice, with Brown-Cummings Funeral Home serving as custodian of the funds. Condolences can be made online at Brown-Cummings.com.
