Enid, OK — The funeral for Norman Clark Roan Jr., 84, of Woodward, will be 10 a.m. today, June 21, 2008, at Nichols-Zwanziger Chapel, Woodward. Howard Harralson will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Woodward.
He was born March 11, 1924, in Gate to Norman Clark and Lila Jo Swigart Roan and died Tuesday, June 10, 2008, at Woodward Regional Hospital.
He attended Sharon Public Schools, graduating from Sharon High School.
He joined the Navy following graduation and was stationed in San Diego during World War I, where he attended communication school as a part of the original crew to the USS Ajax. He was stationed in the Pacific Theater as a radioman.
Following his discharge, he attended college for one year in California before returning to Oklahoma to finish college at Oklahoma State University. During the summers, he worked for KATY Railroad in Woodward County.
He married Maudie B. Cammerer Dec. 26, 1948. In 1951, he graduated from Oklahoma State University and accepted a commission with the Air Force, where he served 21 years. He was stationed in Birmingham, Ala., and twice at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, near Dayton, Ohio, where he earned his first masters degree in industrial engineering. He was stationed in Tokyo, Japan twice, once during the Korean War. He did two tours of duty in Vietnam, one tour in Bangkok, Thailand, He served at San Bernardino Air Force Base and Beal Air Force Base, Marysville, Calif. He also served at Hill Air Force Base near Odgen, Utah. He retired as a major from Kelly Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas, in 1972.
After retiring from the Air Force, he attended and taught at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, where he earned his second master’s degree in industrial arts. He also taught a year at BYU in Hawaii before returning to Oklahoma, where he taught at Vici High School for 8 1/2 years. He finished his second career teaching math and social studies to inmates at Washita Correctional Center, Poteau.
He had been in scouting since 1936 and served as a Cub Master for six years, a Scout Master for 35 years and a member of the Order of the Arrow for 30 years. He received his Wood badge training at San Bernardino and also taught Wood badge.
He had been a member of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints since 1971, serving as branch clerk and branch president.
Surviving are his wife, Maudie, of the home in Woodward; two sons, Michael Roan of Provo and David Roan of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; three sisters, Betty Hudson, Virginia “Ginger” Alexander and Yvonne Nash; nine grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by one son.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home to LDS Church building fund.
