ENID, Okla. —
Silvana was born to Emilio and Lina (Asso) Mengozzi on Oct. 14, 1921, in Florence, Italy, and passed away Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012, at United Methodist Home in Enid. At her request, she was cremated. A private family service will be held at a later date. Cremation arrangements are by Anderson-Burris Funeral Home and Crematory.
Silvana was a young war bride, as she met and married Quentin L. Spurlin, who was in the United States Army stationed in Florence.
When her husband was reassigned to the United States and was unable to take his new wife with him, Silvana stayed in Florence and gave birth to their daughter Florence “Lori” in 1946. After three years of separation due to immigration policy, the two of them traveled by sea and entered the United States through Ellis Island, where they were reunited as a family with her husband Quentin. In 1950, a son Alan was born. Silvana loved the military life and the travel it entailed. She was a talented seamstress and was very artistic and loved animals of all kinds.
She loved hosting family and friends in her native country, and spent many years doing just that and being a wonderful guide.
“Nonna,” as she was affectionately called, loved her grandchildren, her extended family, and all of the children that were in her life.
Surviving are daughter, Florence “Lori” Carroll and husband Buddy of Enid; son, Alan Spurlin and wife Rene of Pensacola, Fla.; three grandsons, Trey and wife Maria, John and wife Kathryn, and Jordan and wife Sarah; great-grandchildren, Ellie and Ryan; brother, Marcello Mengozzi and wife Paola of Florence, Italy; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, all of Italy.
Silvana was preceded in death by her husband, Quentin, and grandson Troy Carroll.
Memorials may be made to Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
