ENID, Okla. —
COOKSON, Okla. — Funeral service for Norma Jeane (Harvey) Brooks will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, at Cookson United Methodist Church in Cookson. Pastor Rudy Freese of Cookson United Methodist Church will officiate. Visitation for Norma will be 6-8 p.m. today, Dec. 28, 2012, with her family at Reed-Culver Funeral Home. Interment will be in Cookson-Proctor Cemetery, next to her husband James F. Brooks.
Norma Jeane Brooks was born Nov. 23, 1925, on the family farm two miles north of Carmen, Okla., the third child of seven born to James Richard and Veatrice Rose Middleton-Harvey.
She attended school and graduated from Carmen High School in 1943.
On Oct. 14, 1945, Norma married James Francis Brooks. This union was blessed with nine children in 12 years.
The family settled in Enid, Okla., where Jim sold motor vehicles.
In June 1970, Norma and her husband and four youngest children relocated to Cookson, Okla. They bought the Cookson Village Resort on beautiful Lake Tenkiller and ran a family operated business until July 1, 2012.
It was now that Norma could retire and live across the road from the business. Raising nine children would be quite a feat for any woman, but Norma made it look effortless. She never operated a car, yet she made sure all of her children could drive, and take her to appointments when needed. She loved driving the countryside visiting with neighbors and catching up on the latest. She valued tradition and served a noon meal every day and Sunday dinner, usually made of her homemade turkey gravy on biscuits or her succulent roast beef dinners, and anyone walking in the door was offered a plate.
For 40 years, the store stayed open 7 days a week, so others had the supplies they needed. Her husband passed from this life in 1983. Norma remained in the Lake Tenkiller area, close to her family and her friends.
The Lord called Norma home from her labors on Thursday, Dec. 27, 2012, at her home in Cookson, with her family at her side. She was 87 years old. She will be missed for her steadfast determination, her honesty and her unchanging love for her family and her friends.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents; husband Jim in 1983; daughter, Marcheta Jeane Brooks in 2010; and son, Harvey James Brooks in 2006. She joins a brother, Harold Harvey; a sister, Lois Skipwith; a brother, Jack Harvey and his wife Nadine; brother-in-law, Lyle Schanbacher; daughters-in-law, Sandra Kay Martin-Brooks and Robin Brooks; and one grandson and one great-grandson.
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Cynthia Rose “Cindy” Ballew and husband Robert of Cookson, Okla.; sons, Terry Ray Brooks of Tulsa, Okla., Monte Joe Brooks of Cookson, Okla., Steven Louis and wife Mitzie Brooks of Enid, Okla., Rodney Lee Brooks of Cookson, Okla., Bradford Lynn Brooks of Cookson, Okla., and Robert Edward Brooks of Cookson, Okla. She leaves her sister, Doris Schanbacher of Cherokee, Okla., and her brothers, Don Harvey and wife LaDonna of Enid, Okla., and Jerry Harvey and wife Edyce of Macomb, Okla.
Her legacy lives on in her numerous grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, and a host of friends and loved ones.
Those wishing to express their sympathy are asked to consider the Cookson United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 15, Cookson, OK 74427, T.A.C.O., P.O. Box 37, Cookson, OK 74427, or the charity of the donor’s choice.
