Raymond Dale “Bud” Munkres

Published 12-7-12

ENID — Raymond Dale “Bud” Munkres was born April 24, 1945, in Enid, Okla., to Roy R. “Rusty” and Louise (Mallory) Munkres.

He attended the University of Oklahoma on a Navy ROTC scholarship. He was commissioned in January 1968, and trained as a pilot in trainer and attack-type aircraft. After service as a jet fighter instructor, he transferred to multi-engine aircraft and flew missions in Antarctica in support of the National Science Foundation. After service in the Navy, he attended law school at OU and was admitted to the Bar in 1976.

He practiced business and bankruptcy law and served as U.S. Trustee for the Bankruptcy Court of the Western District of Oklahoma. He had a life-long passion for books and served 20 years on the Metropolitan Library Commission for Oklahoma County, including one term as chairman. He strongly resisted censorship in all its forms and served on the Intellectual Freedom Committee of the American Library Association.

In 1993, he was awarded the Gale Group prize as the nation’s outstanding library trustee. He also served on the Oklahoma Center for the Book and was for several years a prize judge for the Oklahoma Book Awards.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, LouAnna (Sauber) of Midwest City; father, Roy Munkres; brother, Mark and sister-in-law Jan, all of Ames, Okla.; son and daughter-in-law, James and Michelle Munkres of Bartlesville; daughter, Anne Munkres of Wyton, England; son and daughter-in-law, John and Stephanie Munkres and granddaughter, Julianne Munkres of Del City; and four-legged pal, Tip.

He loved sailing with his family and OU baseball. He believed we would all meet again, “some sunny day.”  The family would like to express a special thank you to OU Medical Center and OU Physicians for the wonderful care they provided Bud.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to OU Medical Center to support pancreatic cancer research.
