Maxine Austin

ENID, Okla. — The memorial service celebrating the life of Mrs. Maxine Austin, of Enid, will be held 10 a.m. today, Feb. 9, at First Presbyterian Church of Enid with the Rev. Andrew Long officiating under the direction of Brown-Cummings Funeral Home.

She was born Oct. 24, 1910, to Roy and Ethel Sanford in Marshall, Okla., and passed away Feb. 7, 2013.

She moved to Enid with her family at age 7. She earned her A.B. degree at the University of Oklahoma; she also attended Randolph Macon.

She married the love of her life, Mr. Marsden Austin, who passed away. She later married Mr. Howard Spickelmier.

She authored a book of poetry and a book of short stories. She was a very gracious lifelong supporter and contributor to the arts in Enid. She was a member of numerous poetry groups and regularly attended national poet conventions.

She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Enid, Enid Writers Club, Enid Arts Council, Don Blanding Poetry Society of Enid, Poetry Society of Oklahoma, Chapter AQ P.E.O., and the Sons and Daughters of the Cherokee Strip. She was a supporter of The Enid Symphony Orchestra, Gaslight Theatre, the Tri-State Music Festival, the Enid Gives Campaign, and Main Street Enid. She was a reading mentor for school children, a supportive grandmother, and an avid OU football fan.

She received the Oklahoma Writers Association PEGASUS Award, the Friend of Leonardo’s Award, and a Community Service Award from Gov. Brad Henry.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Ann Austin Boone.

She is survived by her son, Sanford and wife Judy Austin of Oklahoma City; grandson, Ford Austin and wife Lauree Dash of LA; granddaughter, Shayna Marino; and great-grandson, Hayden Marino of Oklahoma City.

The family would like to thank the staff at The Commons and a special thanks to Sharon for her assistance.

Memorials may be given in her name to a charity of the donor’s choice with Brown-Cummings serving as custodian of the funds.

    Service for Mr. Earl Herman Rivenburg, 82, of Gilmer, Texas, will be 2 p.m. Saturday, May 18, 2013, at Croley Funeral Home Chapel in Gilmer, with Pastor Kerry Roy officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. today, May 17, 2013, at the funeral home.
    Mr. Rivenburg passed away on Monday, May 13, 2013, at Wesley Oaks Memory Care Center in Sulphur Springs, Texas, from complications of pneumonia.
    He was born Dec. 6, 1930, in Peabody, Kan., to Hugh and Elizabeth Rivenburg.
    Earl was their fifth and final child, as his mother died shortly after his birth. He was given to a hired hand and his wife to raise and unfortunately, his was not a happy childhood.
    At an early age, he set out on his own and was taken in by Emma Seifert as a farmhand in Carrier, Okla., where he graduated from high school in 1948. It was here that he met and married his first wife, who bore his two children.

    Graveside service for Mary Frances Whitfill, 97, will be 2 p.m. Saturday, May 18, 2013, in Memorial Park Cemetery, Kansas City, Mo.  Rev. Suzie Goldt will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home.
    Mary was born May 27, 1915, in Kansas City, Mo., to William Edward and Mary Etta (Paradise) Major and passed away Wednesday, May 15, 2013, at The Commons in Enid, Okla.
    She grew up in Kansas City, Mo., graduating from Central High School in 1932.
    She married her high school sweetheart, Elton Whitfill, on June 8, 1935, and celebrated 72 years of marriage before his passing in 2008. She was also preceded in death by a great-grandson.

    He died Monday, April 15, 2013, in Houston, Texas.  
    He worked as a field service engineer for General Electric in Oklahoma City, Enid, and Houston.

    Memorial graveside service for Lisa Hightower, 52, was held at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 16, 2013, at Cantonment Cemetery under the direction of Redinger Funeral Home, Seiling.
    Lisa was born July 9, 1960, in Clinton, Okla., to Thomas Francis Lee and Maymie Limpy and died Thursday, May 2, 2013, at Sparks Hospital, Fort Smith, Ark.
    Lisa graduated from high school in Eufaula, Okla. She was a homemaker for her family.

    Preceded by one brother, Jim Beam; two half-brothers, LeRoy Anding and Tillman Beam; and one half-sister, Theola Beam Rush.
    Surviving are brothers, Bob Beam and wife Vivian of Edmond, Okla., Ed Beam of Crystal Lake, Ill., and Larry Beam and wife Beth of Bogue, Kan.; and sister, Linda Beam Parker of Lake Mary, Fla.
