ENID —
Lynn E. (Jerry) Gerber, a decorated army veteran of World War II and a former engineer with Phillips Petroleum Co., died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2012, at age 93. Jerry was born December 23, 1918, to John and Eva (Stevens) Gerber in Driftwood, Oklahoma. The services for Jerry will be 2 p.m. Saturday, October 6, 2012, in Henninger-Hinson Funeral Home Chapel, with Reverend Keith Miller officiating. Burial will be in Karoma Cemetery in Goltry, Oklahoma.
He and his wife, Ila, had three sons, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Gerber passed away in his home at Golden Oaks in Enid as the family was gathering for the couple’s 70th wedding anniversary on the following day.
A lifelong resident of northwestern Oklahoma, Gerber graduated from Driftwood High School. During World War II he served in the 45th Infantry Division and took part in the invasion of Sicily in 1943. Later that year, he was wounded near Salerno, Italy, and captured by German forces. He spent the rest of the war in German prisoner of war camps. Gerber was listed as missing in action for several months, and as time passed with no word of his whereabouts, relatives began to fear that he was dead. When they suggested a memorial service, however, Ila refused. She insisted that her husband was alive, and eventually she received a letter from him through the Red Cross.
After the war, Gerber worked in the city of Cherokee’s power plant before signing on with Phillips. He worked in Guymon; Borger, Texas; Hobbs, N.M.; Midland, Texas; Lindsay; Seiling; and Alva before retiring at Golden Oaks in Enid.
He was a Southern Baptist deacon and stayed active in church work all his life. Gerber loved music. He was a self-taught guitarist, bugler and piano player, and his bass voice was a feature of church choirs and quartets wherever he lived. Gerber was also an avid fisherman who taught the sport to his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by Ila; brother, Earl; sons, Larry and Barbara Gerber, of Los Angeles, John and Midge Gerber of Weatherford and Tim and Kay Gerber of Stillwater; grandchildren, Casey Gerber, Lisa Robinson, Courtney Johnson, Jodi Wilson and Ellen Gerber; and great-grandchildren, Owen, Logann, Stella, Merritt and Cody.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home to the Parkinson’s Foundation of Oklahoma. Remembrances and condolences can be given to the family at www.enidwecare.com.
