Former OU quarterback Steve Davis died in Indiana plane crash

NORMAN, Okla. — Former Oklahoma quarterback Steve Davis was among two victims in a plane crash Sunday in South Bend, Ind. A South Bend television station confirmed the death with the cororner.

Two persons survived the crash and are hospitalized. A woman on the ground was injured. The second victim has not been identified.

Davis, 60, was best known as the Sooners’ quarterback from 1973-75. During that span OU went 32-1-1 and claimed back-to-back national championships in 1974 and 1975. His 32 wins were a program record until it was surpassed this past season by Landry Jones.

He later became a color commentator for CBS Sports college football telecasts in the 1980s. This past season, he worked as an analyst on OU’s pregame show.

Davis, who was born in Sallisaw, was one of eight quarterbacks on the Sooners’ roster in 1971. NCAA rules did not allow freshmen to play in those days. He redshirted in 1972. After winning the job in the 1973, Davis took over the Sooners’ wishbone offense and helped lead them to 10-0-1 season. OU went 11-0 in 1974 to claim the program’s fourth national championship. In 1975, OU lost its only game with Davis under center on Nov. 8, 1975, to Kansas. OU won its final two regular season games and then beat Michigan in the 1976 Orange Bowl to win the national championship.

South Bend Memorial Hospital spokeswoman Maggie Scroope said Monday that the two survivors who were on board the private jet were Jim Rogers, who’s listed in serious condition, and Christopher Evans, who’s in fair condition. She did not have their hometowns or their ages.

Scroope says a woman on the ground who was injured when the jet crashed Sunday afternoon is in fair condition. She identified that woman as Diana McKeown.

The jet began its journey in Tulsa.
