Vegas too absorbed with Obama's little speeches

ENID — Really.

Do the city officials in Las Vegas think that when the president is making a point about saving money -- and he mentions that you don’t go blow money in Vegas if you’re trying to save for college -- that anyone really won’t book a trip to Vegas because of it?

President Obama got in trouble a year or so ago when he made some kind of remark about Vegas as an example of spending excessively in Vegas. He did it again yesterday in making another point about excessive spending, and why the government needs to cut back.

Hey -- you folks running things out in Vegas! Here’s a memo for you: PEOPLE VIEW VEGAS AS GLAMOROUS AND EXCESSIVE!

And, isn’t that the way people in Vegas want to be thought of? Do Vegas business people want people to think its NOT a place where you can basically go and do and BUY anything you absolutely want?

The mayor of Las Vegas has said he won’t welcome President Obama to town if he tries to come. And Sen. Harry Reid has apparently sent a letter to Obama telling him to knock it off in making the comparisons with excessive spending to Vegas.

“Enough is enough,” Democratic Congresswoman Shelley Berkley said in a statement. “President Obama needs to stop picking on Las Vegas and he needs to let Americans decide for themselves how and where to spend their hard-earned vacation dollars.”

Silly, really. Like I said, Obama’s little pep talks on how he intends to rein in government spending will have absolutely no effect on anyone suddenly deciding “Hey, I think I’ll skip that Vegas trip because of what the president said.”

Seriously, Vegas business leaders need to worry less about Obama’s words, and start worrying more about his agenda and his actions.

They need to be more concerned with the tax hikes he plans on the very clientele Vegas wants coming back to Sin City. When the big rollers are paying more than 50 percent of their income in taxes, that will keep them away from Vegas more than the president trying to make a verbal point.’

Obama’s words aren't a threat to the struggling economy of Las Vegas. But, his agenda is.
