Filling the spiritual cavities in our life

I went to the dentist this week for a cleaning and found out I have a cavity.

I haven’t had one of those show up in two decades. And it got me to thinking about my spiritual life and whether or not I might have some cavities there, too.

I think sometimes as Christians we get to a place where we think everything is fine so we get a bit lax in our walk. Then suddenly we realize, hidden in the recesses, is a problem that has been slowly festering. The problem could be something minor that, given over time, could become major.

For example, if you’re like me, you miss one Sunday because of illness and the next Sunday you miss because there are tons of chores to catch up on. Before you know it, you’ve missed a whole month of worship because of this and that.

Another example is quiet time with God. Again, I would miss one day because something came up and the next day I claimed I would reschedule. But somehow, those moments slipped by as did a week or two.

In either example, the problem isn’t that I missed, the problem is that I missed out on the communing with fellow siblings in the Christ and Christ Himself.

My dentist told me he wasn’t worried about me having a cavity — as long as I scheduled to get it filled within the next six months.

Isn’t that true with us and God? Our Lord is faithful and always will be there, even if we put Him off for a while. But problems, like cavities, will arise in our spiritual walk if we go too long without getting filled.

“Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another.” Hebrews 10:23-25
