Great is His faithfulness every year

Many of us made new year resolutions — promises, I dare say — and many of us have already faltered in keeping them.

Isn’t that like us and our relationship with the Lord?

We were once so on fire for Him, and now we are merely going through the motions.

We told Him we would do this (fill in the blank), if only He would do that (fill in the blank).

We had good intentions, but ... well, that reminds me of the old adage: “The road to hell is paved with good intentions.”

Fortunately, despite our lack of faithfulness, the Lord is faithful as portrayed in this great hymn:

“Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father;

There is no shadow of turning with Thee,

Thou changest not, Thy compassions they fail not,

As thou has been, Thou forever will be.

/Great is Thy faithfulness!

Great is Thy faithfulness!

Morning by morning new mercies I see

All I have needed Thy hand hath provided

Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord unto me!

/Summer and winter and springtime and harvest,

Sun, moon, and stars in their courses above;

Join with all nature in manifold witness,

To Thy great faithfulness, mercy, and love.

/Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,

Thine own great presence to cheer and to guide;

Strength for today, and bright hope for tomorrow

Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside.”

The pardon for sin ought to leave us grateful and thankful. That redeemed attitude alone will cause you and me to want to live for Him.

“I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God — this is your spiritual act of worship.” (Romans 12:1) The Message basically interprets this verse to say “place your everyday, ordinary life in God’s hands.”

Our faith in Him should naturally make us want to please Him, worship Him, live for Him.

Maybe your resolution for 2012 should be to re-evaluate your relationship with Him and go from there. He is patiently waiting for you and me with open arms.
