Shoppers can cash in for Christmas in Enid

The sixth annual Candy Cane Cash promotion has a new element this year that will allow local and area shoppers in participating stores to be instantly rewarded this holiday season.

The Candy Cane Cash drawing is 9 a.m. Dec. 12 at David Allen Memorial Ballpark.

Shoppers at participating stores collect tickets they will need to have at the ballpark. A copy of the ticket goes into a giant hopper.

“We’ve had people win who have two tickets and people with binders full. People won who shopped at small stores and large ... It’s very random, and you don’t know who will win,” said April Danahy, committee member.

Debbie Knoll, Enid News & Eagle advertising manager, a sponsor of the event, said in the past secret shoppers have tested businesses to see how well they promoted the event. This year, an enhanced secret shopper will allow those shopping at participating merchants to win prizes themselves.

There are two separate secret shopper programs this year. The first is for employees of participating businesses. If employees are “shopped” and know Candy Cane Cash rules and offer tickets they receive a $25 gift card.

The second is for consumers visiting participating stores. If they are selected by a secret shopper and are knowledgeable about Candy Cane Cash or have received tickets they can win gift certificates.

“If they are going there and shopping in the store, shopping locally, they have the opportunity to win ... cash and prizes,” Knoll said.

For every $10 spent in a participating store, the customer will receive a ticket. Prizes will be drawn for a total of $8,000 in separate drawings. The grand prize is $5,000.

“I think it encourages people who may think of shopping out of town to give participating merchants first shot. If they shop there they may win the grand prize. It encourages people to keep more money in Enid and brings people into town from other areas to shop for a chance to win,” Danahy said.
