Sunland serves airmen

ENID — Helping the men and women of Vance Air Force Base clearly see is the business of the local branch of Sunland Optical.

Located in the Vance Exchange, Bldg. 415, Sunland is part of an El Paso, Texas,-based company that has been serving the military since the late 1950s.

Sunland’s local office is run by certified optician Dan Newton, and offers a complete range of glasses and contact lenses.

“We don’t do the exams, but we do the fittings for glasses. We do contacts,” Newton said. “Just anything with glasses and contacts, we take care of.”

Like the BX, Sunland offers its services only to active-duty military and retirees, as well as their dependents, Newton said.

“Our goal is to help the military families,” he said. “If you are serving the country, or if you did serve the country, we’ll help you.”

Sunland’s on-base location offers convenience to military members and retirees, as well as savings over civilian opticians.

“Prices are insanely cheap,” Newton said. “We have the cheapest contacts in town, and our prices beat 1-800-Contacts, too.”

For eyeglass frames, prices range from $40 to $100-plus, Newton said. Sunland carries a range of designer frames, including Calvin Klein, Coach, Sean John and Randy Jackson.

“Our lenses are at least half (price), if not more, what they would be in town,” Newton said. “Our markup is extremely low.”

For children under 18, Sunland offers free polycarbonate safety lenses.

“We like to think of their safety first,” Newton said.

Newton’s shop sells safety glasses and prescription sunglasses, as well as protective eyewear for troops about to deploy.

“Its a protective lens that’s made out of Trivex, which is usually what most helicopter windshields are made out of,” he said.

Each pair of glasses Newton sells comes with a one-year warranty. He also will deliver glasses or contacts on base. He does free repairs, as well.

Sunland is another benefit for military members and retirees, Newton said.

“They’re out there serving us, so why can’t we serve them better?” he said. “Even for retirees. Glasses aren’t cheap. We don’t want them having to struggle to get glasses or choosing not to get glasses. We can take care of them.”

Sunland’s Vance location is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

“If it’s 5 o’clock and you can’t get there, give me a call,” he said. “I’ll stay late, I’ll deliver them to you. I don’t mind.”
