Lessons learned toward Eagle still apply today

In 1998, when I was a freshman in high school, I followed in my father’s footsteps and became a second-generation Eagle Scout.  Scouting has enriched my life in countless ways, and I have fond memories of the experiences I enjoyed as a Boy Scout and a Venturer. The first time I was away from home for an extended period of time without family was the 1997 National Scout Jamboree in Fort A.P. Hill Virginia. The biggest lesson I learned at the jamboree was responsibility.  I had to think about simple things like taking my lunch and enough water as I explored the jamboree grounds with my buddy. After I graduated high school I joined Oklahoma Army National Guard. Many of the lessons I learned on my journey to becoming an Eagle Scout directly applied to serving in the Guard, from teamwork and orienteering to preparedness and loyalty. I also started college at the University of Oklahoma pursuing a degree in chemical engineering. The most helpful lesson learned in Scouting that I applied in college was “Be Prepared.”  Whether it was the start of the semester, a class, a test or a final exam, I always had something to prepare for.  After graduating college I took a job as a process engineer with a large engineering procurement and construction company in Houston. Many lessons learned in Scouting and refined in National Guard apply at work as well. The most significant of which is teamwork. I work as part of a team to design a processing unit that is efficient and safe to operate while completing the work on time and under budget. I will always treasure the memories made and experiences shared as a Boy Scout and the lessons I learned will continue to enrich my life for many years to come.
