The Civitan creed is to do hands-on work in the community, and that is what Enid Civitan Club does.
“We’re a hands-on service club, helping the disabled and the mentally and physically challenged,” said Helen Johnson, Enid Civitan president-elect.
Enid Civitan started in 1957, and members recently celebrating the 50th anniversary of the organization in 2007. The club has 44 members today. Among the Civitan projects are building ramps for disabled residents; sponsoring dances for the disabled twice a year, in the fall and spring; and assisting with the Horn of Plenty food drives.
Enid Civitan Club started a Reading is Fundamental program at McKinley Elementary School 10 years ago with a $300 donation and now funds the RIF programs in six schools — reaching students in grades pre-kindergarten to sixth with $3,500 annually, including grants.
Civitan members raise money by performing flag projects six times a year. Civitans will post and retire flags on holidays to help raise money for the reading program. They also own and operate a number of Civitan homes for elderly residents and own Civitan Gardens at Enid Woodring Regional Airport.
“The money we raise, mostly stays here,” she said.
The club will sponsor a classic car show in Enid June 20 at Garfield County Fairgrounds. There will be trophies and cash prizes for best of show and best engine, paint and interior. Other classes will be determined by entries.
The group sponsors a clergy appreciation day annually to recognize pastors among the membership.
April is Civitan Awareness Month and a window at Oakwood Mall will be decorated to promote that activity. Enid Civitan Club meets each Friday at Raymies Cafeteria.
