Enix, 100

Kathryn Gulker Enix will celebrate her 100th birthday with a reception for family and friends 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012, at Hennessey Manor Nursing Home, 705 East Third, Hennessey, OK 73742, where cards may be sent.

Kathryn was born Oct. 13, 1912, in Kingfisher, Okla., to W. Earl and Maude Callison Gulker.

She moved to Hennessey with family at age 3, where she started her education. They later moved to Omega, where she attended school and graduated from Kingfisher High School. She attended college at Cottey College, Nev., Missouri, and the University of Oklahoma.

She earned membership in Phi Theta Kappa and Kappa Delta Pi and received her bachelor of education from the University of Oklahoma, also studying fine arts and social studies. She has been a lifetime alumni member of both Cottey and Oklahoma University.

Kathryn married Cecil Leslie Enix Nov. 25, 1938.

During WWII, she taught in government child care schools in San Diego and Jacksonville, while her husband Cecil served in the Navy.

She and Cecil loved to travel, and visited all 50 states and many foreign countries.

Kathryn taught school in Omega, Geary, Hennessey and Lexington Oklahoma. She worked for three banks, including Farmers and Merchants Bank of Hennessey. She taught piano to many of the local youth, often teaching the second generation.

Kathryn has been a member of Rebekah Lodge for more than 60 years, where she was Past Noble Grand. In Eastern Star work, she was a Past Worthy Matron. She also was a member of American Association of University Women and Shakespeare Club. She helped start the Hennessey Public Library and was active in its operations for several years.

Her hobbies have been music, china and oil painting, travel, and politics. She served several years as the county chairman of a county political party, and served on the local election board. She often was pianist/organist at local churches in the towns wherever she lived. Kathryn considered as her children the many girls and boys she taught piano and organ.
