Two weeks prior to my 50th high school reunion I found a lump on my left breast, which prompted me to see my doctor as soon as possible. After the reunion and one day after Memorial Day 1993, I had my operation in Tulsa by a surgeon, new from MD Anderson, who removed my breast, along with 19 lymph glands. Later, my arm swelled large, stayed that way and has hurt at different times ever since. Came home three days later.
It was too soon for visitors, but the new lady preacher was there before I could say “Boo.” I was about out of it all — but she prayed for me, and I needed that. Next day, a friend brought us a big pot of chicken and noodles (for two people to eat??? Ha!) To this day now, I’m still not too fond of that kind of food.
My husband, who was a pilot at Woodring, stayed home with me a few days — but, he sat around looking and acting as if I was on my death bed. I never asked him what he was thinking — I just didn’t feel like it.
I had church friends whom I know were praying for me. They were wonderful. I started doing all my work as before, mowing two big lawns, trimming trees out front, laundry, housekeeping, everything. Kept my mind busy. In August and September I had radiation for 28 work days. It’s been over 16 years now since all this started. My husband passed away about two years ago, on our 63rd anniversary, of all things.
I have prayed a lot and truly believe God and Jesus has been watching over me through these years. And I have stories about my angels helping me.
I’m now 83 and have a wonderful male friend for a companion who is actually an old friend.
So, take it from me girls and boys. Be Yourself! Smile a lot and enjoy yourself! As my motto goes, live, love, laugh and be happy — and have hope and faith.
