My personal journey began in January 2008 when I was diagnosed at the age of 43 with early stages of breast cancer. Even though I was extremely alarmed upon the news, I was not completely shocked. My mother and maternal grandfather both battled breast cancer. I had a successful lumpectomy Feb. 14, 2008, and began six rounds of chemotherapy during that summer. I’d like to say thank you to the Dexeus Oncology office for their great care. You are truly a blessing to our community. Because of my high family history of breast cancer, in December 2008 I chose to have a double mastectomy and reconstruction surgery. I will complete the reconstruction process sometime this winter. It’s been a long journey that has not been fun or easy, but with complete trust in my Heavenly Father and great support from my family and friends it has been a journey with many blessings! Through all the surgeries, chemotherapy, and hair loss I wholeheartedly believe my journey has purpose. I would like to say to my husband, Greg, and my kids, Addi and Foster, I love you very much. Thank you for your support and just know you’re stuck with me a LONG time.
I also would like to encourage women to be proactive in screening for breast cancer. The earlier the detection the higher the survival rate. Yearly mammograms and self examinations are important aspects of early detection. It’s important for women to understand the importance of both. In my particular case the mammogram did not detect my cancer. For those women (and men) facing this disease, KEEP FIGHTING — you can do this!
