Personal story: Yes, I believe in miracles - by Patty Melott

I am 62 years old and I am a breast cancer survivor. I was diagnosed with type 4 malignant breast cancer in October 2008. I have gone through chemotherapy, radiation therapy and mastoidectomy surgery.

There is a long history of breast cancer on my mother’s side of our our family. My mother died at age 47 in 1960. Two aunts have died. One aunt and my sister, Mary Melrose of Drummond, also are breast cancer survivors.

I can’t change I have breast cancer, but I can change how I choose to live with it. If not for the love and support of my husband, Larry; my family and friends; my doctors, Dr. Dexeus and Dr. Shreck; the nurses at Dr. Dexeus’ and Dr. Shreck’s office; and the nurses and technicians at St. Mary’s and Bass hospitals, the journey would have been a lot more difficult. All my thanks to all of these people.

Someone asked me if I believe in miracles yes I do, because God gave me a miracle by allowing me to be a breast cancer survivor.
