Relay for Life running for funds next summer

By Bridget Nash Staff Writer

Last summer the local Relay for Life, a fundraiser for American Cancer Society, was a big success, and next summer’s event already is in the planning stages.

“We moved in back to the (downtown) Square,” said Rene Dexeus, of Dexeus Oncology. “We always have a great turn out.”

Last year the local fundraising goal was $110,00, and the relay raised $127,000.

“We had a really good Relay last year even though the economy was down,” said Dexeus.

The 2010 goal is $125,000.

Relay for Life will be June 4, and the first official planning meeting of the committee will be in January.

“We’re always looking for more committee members,” said Dexeus.

The committee’s task is to make the event fun-filled for all who attend. Next summer the relay will incorporate a 5k- and 10k-run, the details of which still are being ironed out. Local runners who want to join the committee are invited to do so to help make the run a success.

Success always has been a part of Enid’s Relay for Life and the event is well known in its regional division of the country, the Heartland Division.

“We always have the most cancer survivors per capita for our region,” said Dexeus, “which is a great honor.”
