Alva FFA members compete in opening ceremonies contest

ENID, Okla. — “To practice brotherhood, honor agricultural opportunities and responsibilities and to develop those qualities of leadership which a FFA member must possess.”

Any past or present FFA member most likely is familiar with these words, as they are stated every time opening ceremonies are held. Opening ceremonies may be performed to open a banquet, meeting, session at state or national convention or even as a competition.

On Nov. 1, two Alva FFA opening ceremonies teams traveled to the small town of Freedom. With several teams from around the area competing, Alva was well represented. The older team, consisting of sophomores and freshman, placed third overall in the competition, barely missing the mark of second place that would have allowed them to compete in the state competition. This team consisted of Terrill Burton, Tatum Honer, Ridge Hughbanks, Jentry Lancaster, Kenzie Kraft, Kolby Slater and Jessica Chegwidden as adviser.

The younger eighth-grade team also had a strong performance. This team consisted of Kathryn Baugh, Zane Hillbig, Cole Koppitz, Cathy Mapes, Ally Riley, Lexie Shafer, and Chegwidden as adviser again.
