ENID, Okla. —
Trenton Ray Grimes, of Pond Creek-Hunter FFA, was one of four national finalists for the environmental science and natural resources-entrepreneurship/placement proficiency award at the 85th National FFA Convention and Expo in Indianapolis.
The award is sponsored nationally by Mosaic Co. as a special project of the National FFA Foundation.
The National FFA Organization’s agricultural proficiency awards program recognizes student achievement in agribusiness gained through establishment of a new business, working for an existing company or otherwise gaining hands-on career experience. It serves as the award structure for an FFA member’s supervised agricultural experience, which is designed to develop specialized skills in 49 categories that they can apply toward their future careers.
Grimes became eligible for the national contest after winning the Oklahoma State FFA competition and took home a $500 award plus a special plaque.
Grimes works with his father to construct and rebuild terraces, waterways and reservoirs in the hopes of reducing topsoil loss and controlling runoff water. In his placement SAE, he’s learned to operate machinery like bulldozers and scrapers while also actively participating in the planning and construction of the natural resource-saving projects. Grimes is supported by his parents, Kris and Roscoe Grimes, and his FFA adviser Tim Winter.
